Biographical statement

Malcolm Leyland (born in Whiston, Lancashire in the UK) lives and works in London and South east of England.

1972 - 75 Warrington college of art, Cheshire, UK.
1975 - 78 Rochester college of Art, Kent, UK. Studying photography.
1980-2001 Advertising photographer based in London.

As a professional photographer Malcolm specialised in still life advertising, being commissioned by many well known advertising and design agencies and publications. He built a reputation for an individual and stylised approach to representing visual messaging for many brands throughout the eighties and nineties.

During this period Malcolm developed an aesthetic and visual signature which stood aside of any commercial influences or constraints. He never veered away from the principles of a private statement and a commitment he made to himself when at art school. Fully committed to the medium he new that photography had at that time a vast unexplored and unrealised creativity. He wanted to move the medium of photography toward something new.

Now, having abandoned commercial work entirely, Malcolm is committed solely to developing those early ideas, building on his aesthetic, and experiment with the medium, Malcolm’s current work is a result of that.
